Tracing the History of Jakarta Through the Old City Tour

Tracking the history of Jakarta is an exciting activity especially for those who have an interest in history and other social sciences because the activity can lead us to look for more related references that will broaden our insights.

One of the spots in order to trace the history of Jakarta is surely the old city area which is located in West Jakarta because it is where the Dutch firstly built the city of Jakarta (formerly called: Batavia) when they occupied Indonesia.

The area is now known as the tourism area of old city that has several legacies such as buildings that today turn to be Museums comprising Fatahillah Museum, Bank Indonesia, Fine Arts and Ceramics and more.

Besides, there is also Toko Merah (Red Shop) building that was formerly inhabited by Baron van Imhoff, a Governor-General VOC who was also the founder of Bogor Palace, and of course, the Port of Sunda Kelapa, one of the most important spot that made Indonesia connected to the other countries through trade relations then.

The old city area is always crowded by visitors especially on weekends, so was it when I visited there last December that made me hard to take some photos to display here.

Likewise, the weather was also somewhat less supportive. Some spots on the old city tourist areas were under renovation, so it wasn't easy to enjoy the atmosphere. Perhaps, I can do it another time.
