The Governor Deems Pedicabs Still Needed in Certain Areas
The Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan would revitalize pedicab (locally known as becak) to operate in certain areas of Jakarta.
As we know, becak is one of the three-wheeled public transportation modes
that is a modified bicycle pedestal, can carry an average of two passengers and
is controlled by a pedicab driver.
According to the governor, becak is still a needed
vehicle in some areas of the capital, particularly in residential areas. The Governor told that he would facilitate the capital
residents who need the mode of transportation to support their daily
activities.
The governor then
cited, people who manage shops at homes require pedicabs to carry goods
purchased from the market and asserted becak would only operate in the specific roads
only, particularly in the township of residential areas.
Several years ago, becak passed by
the roads of the capital until finally the existence of it in the capital
reap the controversy since the government issued the Jakarta Regional
Regulation (Perda) on Basic Pattern and Master Plan Jakarta 1965-1985.
At that time, becak was deemed as the culprit of congestion
and mirror of human exploitation of other human.
Along with the issuance of the regulation, various efforts
of city government to remove becak from the capital continued to be taken.
Removal efforts taken because becak drivers are deemed as an inhumane work that
shall be halted.
On May 16, 1970, governor Ali Sadikin issued an instruction
prohibiting the production and supply of becak to Jakarta. The gradual control
was done until the 1980s taken by his successors.
In the era of Jakarta Governor Soeprapto, he issued a Jakarta
becak free policy since January 1, 1985. Then in the era of Jakarta Governor
Sutiyoso, becak was given a spoken permission to be operated in residential areas
due to the economic crisis. However, the permit was only valid for a few days.
