Condet was Famous for Snake Fruit

Condet is an area in East Jakarta that used to be famous for snake fruit (Indonesian: salak, that I prefer mentioning it through this post. As we know, salak Condet has been an icon of Jakarta, that is why we can see the picture of it on Transjakarta buses today.

Long time ago, many inhabitants in Condet that were dominated by Betawi people planted salak in front of the yard and sold them to Pasar Minggu, an area separated by River Ciliwung besides to Kramat Jati, Jatinegara or Pasar Senen.

Unfortunately, due to the rapid growth of the city of Jakarta, most of the inhabitants sold their houses and their land that finally affected the scarcity of Salak Condet today.

Although the quantity is not much as it used to be, the good news is salak condet still exist because the Department of Food Security, Marine and Agriculture of DKI Jakarta Province has purchased a grove of 4 hectares to preserve the existence of salak condet from the extinction.

The grove is situated on Jalan Kayu Manis RT 7/5, Balekambang, Condet, East Jakarta that I visited a day after visiting Tanah Abang last December due to my curiousity.

The grove is not only planted by the fruit that is in also renowned as Salacca Zalacca,  but also planted by other tropical fruit trees such as mlinjo, duku, kecapi and bucung.

The grove area was very quiet, calm, and shady in the middle of crowded residents' houses. When I visited it, I felt as if I hadn't been in Jakarta. It reminded me of my hometown, somewhere in West Sumatera.   Jakarta Seeks to Preserve Salak Condet from The Extinction

Astonishingly, before I got there, I had asked for an information from some inhabitants I met about the exact location of it. Some of them didn't know where the location was until I found a native inhabitant who finally showed me the way to the location.

After reaching it, I took some photos that I upload here and I really appreciate the local government that seeks to preserve the existence of this fruit in Condet.
